It’s the first day of Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort, and if you can’t be there in person then maybe this will help get you in the Disney Halloween spirit: a first look at 2017’s Haunted Mansion Holiday gingerbread house.
Returning for its 17th season, this year’s gingerbread house is dominated by the looming figure of Oogie Boogie from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas . Oogie hasn’t had a presence in the Ballroom in 13 years, so he is returning with a vengeance at a dominating 7-feet-tall, a full foot above the 6-foot-high house.
Associate art director for Disney Parks Tim Wollweber set the scene.
“The gingerbread mansion this year has a bug problem – gingerbread bugs! But it’s not a problem that a gingerbread Oogie Boogie can’t fix. He pried open the roof of the gingerbread mansion and has his fork at the ready, happy to fix the infestation in the only way he would – by eating them. But quite a few bugs have gotten loose and are rampaging across the ballroom table, tormenting the gingerbread zombies there, who are forced to defend themselves with silverware!”
Guests will see the scope of the bug-problem with not only the 70 bugs in the Ballroom, but also a few that have escaped into the rest of the mansion.
If you’d like to replicate this impressive feat of sweet and make your own mansion at home, sorry, but this is not a do-it-yourself project. The Disney Parks Blog spoke with the creative team at Disneyland Resort Central Bakery – Executive Pastry Chef Jean-Marc Viallet and Lead Pastry Chef Edgar Urtola, and then gave us their list of necessary building supplies. They needed:
- 200 pounds gingerbread
- 200 pounds powdered sugar
- 4 gallons egg whites
- 1 gallon lemon juice
- 30 pounds white chocolate
- 50 pounds gum paste
- 8 ounces (each) food coloring (blue, purple, orange, yellow, red)
- 16 ounces green food coloring
- 50 pounds fondant
- 1/3 pound glitter
The last item was, of course, “200 hours Disney Culinary Magic”. This open-house will last up through the end of Haunted Mansion Holiday in early January.
