Disney Wins Oscars in the Animation and Visual Effects Categories

Disney had a successful night last night at the Oscars. Disney’s Zootopia won for Best Animated Picture topping Kubo and the Two Strings, The Red Turtle, My Life as a Zucchini, and Disney’s other nominated film Moana. This was the third win for Walt Disney Animation since the Best Animated Feature category was introduced in 2001. In past years, Frozen and Big Hero Six won in the same category for Walt Disney Animation. That is in addition to the eight wins that Pixar has won, which Disney acquired in 2006. Zootopia’s film makers Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Clark Spencer all credited the “politically divisive times” as inspiration for the animation.

In addition to Zootopia’s win, Disney’s The Jungle Book also won for Best Visual Effects. The Jungle Book was directed by Jon Favreau. The success of the movie, which grossed more than $950 million worldwide, relied heavily on CGI.

Lastly, Piper won for Best Animated Short Film. Piper was the short film shown before Disney-Pixar’s feature animated film Finding Dory. Pixar hadn’t won in this category since 2002 for their short film For the Birds.
